Roadrunners to host Ricardo Romo UTSA Cross Country Classic this weekend

SAN ANTONIO – More than 4,000 collegiate, high school and open runners will converge on the Alamo City this weekend as the UTSA men’s and women’s cross country teams host the Ricardo Romo UTSA Cross Country Classic this Friday-Saturday, Sept. 22-23, at Brooks City Base Golf Course.

The two-day meet — formerly known as the UTSA Invitational but renamed in August to honor UTSA President Dr. Ricardo Romo, the first Texan to break the four-minute barrier in the mile — begins Friday at 6 p.m. with the women’s 5,000-meter race, followed by the men’s 5k at 6:30. On Saturday, 14 high school races get underway beginning with the girls Gold Division two-mile at 8:30 a.m. and concluding with the Boys 1A 5k at 2:50 p.m. The meet has been moved this year due to heavy construction on UTSA's 1604 Campus.

In the university races on Friday evening, the Roadrunners will compete against teams from Incarnate Word, Rice (men only), St. Mary’s, Schreiner, Texas A&M International and Texas State. Last year’s meet was cancelled due to the threat of Hurricane Rita, but the UTSA men will attempt to defend their team title from 2004. The women finished second to Texas two years ago but won the crown in 2003 with a near-perfect score of 18.

The UTSA men are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Texas A&M Invitational last Saturday in College Station. Junior Carlos Perez led all Roadrunners with a time of 26:37 over 8k to finish 16th out of 104 runners. The women were off last week but placed second to Texas on Sept. 9 at the Texas State Invitational behind a third-place effort from senior Hope Jimenez.
