Perez leads UTSA to fourth at Texas A&M Invitational

COLLEGE STATION – Led by a top-20 finish from junior Carlos Perez, the UTSA men’s cross country team finished fourth at the Texas A&M Invitational held Saturday at Penberthy Intramural Fields.

Perez placed 16th in the 104-man field, covering the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:37. Senior Benson Cheserek was close behind in 26:53 for 21st, while senior Aaron Castro took 24th in 26:56. Junior Eric Miller and freshman Corey Vargas rounded out the top five in 43rd (27:44) and 54th (28:25). Junior Adrian Vargas (61st, 28:43), senior Larry Brooks (71st, 29:26) and freshman Bryan Ugochukwu (83rd, 30:43) also competed.

TCU’s Festus Kibet was the overall individual champion, clocking a 25:16 for the 8k loop.

Texas A&M defended its championship with five runners in the top 10 to score 25 points, while Sam Houston State was second with 51 points. TCU was third with 92, followed by UTSA (142), Texas State (156), Stephen F. Austin (178), Texas-Arlington (196), Texas-Pan American (200), Prairie View A&M (227), Trinity (258), Texas A&M International (268), Monterrey Tech (276) and Palo Alto (367).

The Roadrunners host the Ricardo Romo UTSA Cross Country Classic next Friday, Sept. 22, at Brooks City Base Golf Course in San Antonio.
