SAN MARCOS - Led by a third-place showing from senior Hope Jimenez, the UTSA women’s cross country team finished second at the Texas State Invitational Saturday morning at Gary Job Corps Center.
“Overall, I am very pleased with the way we ran today,” sixth-year head coach Rose Monday said. “It was a really close race with a tough Texas team, so I’m proud of the way we competed. We’re on the right track to do some very good things this year.”
Jimenez led three Roadrunners in the top 10 as UTSA took runner-up honors in the team race behind Texas. Jimenez covered the 5,000-meter loop in 18:19 for third place overall and second among collegians behind an unattached competitor and a Texas runner.
Freshman Dana Mecke finished fifth in 18:29, while senior Brianna Mendez took ninth in 18:47. Freshman Faith Barlow and senior Veronica Silva rounded out the top five in 11th (18:51) and 18th (19:23), respectively.
Texas scored 30 points for first place, while UTSA was second with 41, followed by Angelo State (76), Texas A&M-Kingsville (122), St. Mary's (149) and West Texas A&M (236).
The Roadrunners are off until hosting the Ricardo Romo UTSA Cross Country Classic on Friday, Sept. 22, at Brooks City Base Golf Course.
