Baseball announces signing class

SAN ANTONIO - UTSA baseball head coach Sherman Corbett announced the signing of 16 student-athletes to his program on Thursday.

The Roadrunners signed Kevin Clarke, Melvin Kelley, Tyler Klein, Ray Redding, Zach Calhoon, Bradley Chovanec, Jose Hernandez, J.P. Holton, Trent Lockwood J.T. Mackey, Ryan Proudfoot, Ryan Rummel, Jake Sillivan, Greg Sillivent, Zach Smith, Josh Wilson.

"I am extremely optimistic about this group of freshman, junior college and four-year transfer student-athletes," Corbett said. "They will compliment our existing team very well and keep us directed toward competing for the Southland Conference Championship and postseason play. The quality of talent in our incoming pitchers and position players will raise the level of competitiveness that will continue to strengthen this team and program. I am looking forward to fall practices beginning."

2006-07 Baseball Signing Class

Zach Calhoon, P (R/R, 6-1, 180)
Spring, Texas (Klein Collins HS)
Helped lead team to 5A regional final ... a first-team All-District 14-5A selection ... posted a 9-2 record and 2.05 ERA ... earned the team's Tiger Heart & Leadership award.

Bradley Chovanec, P (R/R, 6-4, 180)
Burton, Texas (Burton HS/Blinn JC)
Had a 5-2 record and 3.95 ERA at Blinn JC this past season ... posted a complete-game win against Paris JC to lead squad to the Region XIV semifinals ... a former prep District MVP.

Kevin Clarke, P (R/R, 6-3, 185)
Huntsville, Texas (Huntsville HS)
Finished with a 6-2 record and 1.50 ERA ... a first-team All-District 14-5A selection.

Jose Hernandez, OF (R/L, 5-11, 175)
Anaheim Hills, Calif. (Servite HS/Long Beach State)
Led the Denton Outlaws of Texas Collegiate League (TCL) to league championship ... hit .327 (159 AB) this summer ... led TCL with 49 RBIs and was third with five home runs ... a TCL all-star selection.

J.P. Holton, P (R/R, 5-11, 190)
Lufkin, Texas (Lufkin HS/Hill JC)
Named to the Texas/New Mexico JC All-Star Game after freshman season at Hill JC ... missed the final half of the 2006 season following Tommy John surgery and will redshirt in 2007.

Melvin Kelley, OF (L/L, 5-6, 160)
Grand Prairie, Texas (South Grand Prairie HS)
A second-team all-area 5A selection by The Dallas Morning News ... hit .390 with 31 runs scored, 10 doubles, three triples and 20 RBIs ... added 15 stolen bases.
Tyler Klein, C (B/R, 6-1, 210)
Conroe, Texas (Oak Ridge HS)
Hit .290 with five home runs this past spring ... had a .420 batting average this summer with Columbia Angels 18U team.

Trent Lockwood, 1B/OF (L/L, 6-4, 225)
Groesbeck, Texas (Groesbeck HS/Hill JC)
Played outfield for Hill JC ... third in the Texas Collegiate League (TCL) with 12 doubles ... tied for third in the league with five home runs ... qualified for TCL Home Run Derby.

J.T. Mackey, P/2B (L/R, 5-11, 165)
Austin, Texas (Crockett HS/Texas/Brownsville JC)
An all-state infielder at Crockett HS ... finished 6-4 with 4.81 ERA in 2006.

Ryan Proudfoot, P (R/R, 6-3, 180)
Lindale, Texas (Brookhill School)
Posted an 8-1 record, 1.50 ERA and 110 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched ... had a 7-0 mark and 1.00 ERA this summer with the East Texas Prospects ... led team to IBC World Series Championship in Tampa, Fla.

Ray Redding, P (R/R, 6-7, 205)
Houston, Texas (Lamar HS)
Did not pitch during spring 2006 due to a shoulder injury.

Ryan Rummel, 2B/3B (R/R, 5-11, 180)
Uvalde, Texas (Uvalde HS)
Helped Uvalde to the regional semifinals ... an 4A honorable mention all-state selection ... hit .374 with 36 runs scored (10th in SA area), seven home runs (fourth in SA area) and 36 RBI (fourth in SA area).

Jack Sillivan, P (R/R, 6-1, 165)
Cypress, Texas (Cy-Fair HS)
Helped lead Cy-Fair HS to the 2006 5A quarterfinals ... finished the year with a 9-2 record and 3.10 ERA.

Greg Sillivent, OF (L/L, 6-2, 210)
Granbury, Texas (Grapevine HS/Air Force Academy/Blinn JC)
A 2006 first-team Region 14 all-conference selection ... hit .413 with 16 doubles, two home runs and 25 RBIs at Blinn JC ... also was successful on 20 of 23 stolen base attempts.

Zach Smith, C (R/R, 6-2, 200)
Vancouver, Wash. (Skyview HS)
An outstanding defensive catcher ... helped summer team, Vancouver Cardinals, to the IBC World Series in Tampa, Fla.

Josh Wilson, 1B (R/R, 6-4, 245)
Midland, Texas (Midland HS/Texas Tech/Temple JC)
Helped lead Midland HS to the Texas 5A state tournament ... helped lead Temple JC to its first-ever trip to the Junior College World Series ... hit .360 with 20 doubles, 13 home runs and 60 RBIs ... a Ban Johnson League all-star choice this summer in the Kansas City area.
