UTSA signs 12 to National Letters of Intent
SAN ANTONIO – UTSA men’s track & field head coach Aaron Fox (right) announced Monday the signing of 12 prep standouts to National Letters of Intent during the spring signing period.
UTSA signed Benga Adeeko (San Antonio/Taft HS), Marcus Bibles (San Antonio/Taft HS), Maurice Jackson (Converse/Judson HS), Chris Koenig (Hereford/Hereford HS), Ryan McMakin (Rockport/Rockport-Fulton HS), Mychal Mitchell (Converse/Judson HS), Brandon Oliver (Boerne/Boerne HS), Alton St. Rose (Galena Park/North Shore HS), Bryan Ugochukwu (Pearland/Pearland HS), Corey Vargas (Converse/Judson HS), Johnathan Whittaker (Galena Park/North Shore HS) and Teddy Williams (Tyler/John Tyler HS).
“We are very pleased with this year’s recruiting class,” Fox said. “We feel this group has the potential to make up the points we are losing after this season. They are not only talented and athletic, but are great people as well. These athletes will be assets for the university both on and off the track.”

District champion with 4x100m relay … finished third in the 100m at regionals … regional qualifier in 200m … owns prep best of 10.71 in 100m.
Marcus Bibles ? High Jump ? San Antonio, Texas (Taft HS)
2006 Region IV-5A champion in the high jump … finished fourth at the state meet … won the district title as a senior and cleared a prep best 6-10.
Maurice Jackson ? Jumps ? Converse, Texas (Judson HS)
2006 Region IV-5A champion in the triple jump … finished eighth at the state meet in the triple jump … qualified for the state meet in the long jump in 2004 and the triple jump in 2005 … posted prep bests of 23-0 ľ in the long jump and 47-4 in the triple.
Chris Koenig ? Throws ? Hereford, Texas (Hereford HS)
2006 Class 4A state runner-up in the shot put … district champion and regional qualifier in the shot put and discus … finished third in the discus at regionals … posted prep bests of 58-5 in the shot put and 164-3 in the discus.
Ryan McMakin ? Throws ? Rockport, Texas (Rockport-Fulton HS)
Named 2006 South Texas Field Athlete of the Year by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times … qualified for the Class 4A state meet in both the shot put and discus as a senior … finished fourth in the shot and fifth in the discus … posted prep bests of 57-11 in the shot put and 164-5 in the discus.
Mychal Mitchell ? Hurdles ? Converse, Texas (Judson HS)
Younger brother of current senior Marques Mitchell … posted prep best time of 14.24 in the 110m hurdles.
Brandon Oliver ? Sprints ? Boerne, Texas (Boerne HS)
Helped Boerne’s 4x400m relay team take second at the Class 4A state meet … finished eighth in the 100m at the state meet … district champion in the 100m … also member of state-qualifying 4x200m relay team … posted prep best of 10.88 in the 100m.
Alton St. Rose ? Jumps/Hurdles ? Galena Park, Texas (North Shore HS)
Regional qualifier in both the 110m hurdles and triple jump as a senior … owns career bests of 14.30 in the 110m hurdles, 40.10 in 300m hurdles and 47-5 in the triple jump.
Bryan Ugochukwu ? Sprints ? Pearland, Texas (Pearland HS)
District champion in the 400m, 800m and with the 4x400m relay team … posted prep bests of 49.05 in the 400m and 1:54.41 in the 800m.
Corey Vargas ? Middle Distances? Converse, Texas (Judson HS)
District champion in the 800m as a senior … posted prep best time of 1:56.5 in the 800m.
Johnathan Whittaker Jumps Galena Park, Texas (North Shore HS)
Class 5A state runner-up in the high jump as a senior … finished third in the triple jump at this year’s state meet … qualified for the state meet in the high jump as a junior … posted prep bests of 7-0 in the high jump and 48-2 in the triple jump.
Teddy Williams ? Sprints ? Tyler, Texas (John Tyler HS)
Lead leg in school’s 4x100m relay team that finished fifth at 5A state meet (41.01) … district winner in 200m as a senior … has career best of 21.5 in that event.
