| June 7, 2006 Three Roadrunners picked in MLB Draft
SAN ANTONIO – UTSA junior Michael McKennon and seniors Noah Tritz and J.R. Voyles were selected in day two of the 2006 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft on Wednesday afternoon.
McKennon, UTSA's starting right fielder this past season, was picked by the Cincinnati Reds in the 25th round (744th overall). A second-team All-Southland Conference selection this season, he led the team with a .371 batting average, 89 hits, 11 home runs and 54 RBIs. The Pearland native, also was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI second team.
Tritz was chosen in the 32nd round (960th overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays. The right-hander led the Roadrunners twith eight saves and was second with eight wins in 2006. He also earned second-team All-SLC honors. Voyles will continue his baseball career with the New York Mets, as he was selected in the 34th round. The second baseman had a career-best 23-game hitting streak earlier this season and set a single-game school record with five walks against Nicholls State on April 14. Voyles, who hit .294 with 11 stolen bases, also garnered second team All-SLC accolades in 2006. |
