Brannon’s gem leads UTSA past ULM, 5-2, in SLC action

MONROE, La. – Junior pitcher Blake Brannon tossed his first complete game of the season as the UTSA baseball team avoided being swept with a 5-2 victory over Louisiana-Monroe in Southland Conference action Sunday afternoon at Indian Field.

UTSA improved to 32-16 on the year and 16-8 in SLC play, ULM dipped to 15-33 overall and 9-13 in league play.

Brannon (right) went the distance, scattered seven hits, allowed two runs, punched out four Indians and walked one. Brannon improved his record to 5-6 on the year.

Sophomore Zach Etheredge had a 2-for-6 day with two runs batted in and two runs scored, while senior Lee Todesco collected two RBI and scored three runs, with a solo home run on the day.

In game two, UTSA scored first in the second inning with three runs off three hits and an Indian error. Todesco led off with a walk, then advance to second off a sacrifice bunt. Etheredge drove in the first run for UTSA with an RBI-single up the middle. Junior Ryan Saltzgaber’s base hit to left center plated freshman Michael Rockett, who reached base with a hit. The Roadrunners third run came off an ULM error and made the score 3-0.

The Indians trimmed the lead to 3-1 when sophomore Dexter Fontenot homered over the left field wall. In the fourth inning, Louisiana-Monroe cut the deficit 3-2 when junior Bo Bowman singled up the middle and brought home freshman Ben Soignier home from second base.

The Roadrunners pushed their lead to 4-2 in the top of the eighth inning. Rockett led off the inning with a single to right field. Etheredge’s triple to right field scored Rockett from first base. UTSA increased its lead 5-2 off a wild pitch by ULM pitcher.

Game One
Senior left-handed pitcher Caleb Barton got the loss for UTSA and dipped his record to 0-5 on the season. Barton went two and two-thirds innings, allowed three runs, four walks, scattered five hits and struck out one.

Junior pitcher James Stephens picked up his sixth win of the season and improved to 6-2 in the year. He pitched seven strong innings for the Indians, gave up two runs off six hits, fanned six Runners and did not allowed a walk.

Louisiana-Monroe jumped early on UTSA 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Travis Drader smacked his second home run of the series, to give ULM a 1-0 lead. Freshman Ben Soignier plated the second run of the game with an RBI single to left field. Junior Josh Morrison scored the third run off his RBI single to left field. Todesco’s blasted his sixth home run of the season to put the Roadrunners on the board and make the score 3-1 in the fourth inning.

In the top of sixth inning, junior Michael McKennon smacked a double to right center field. Todesco collected his second RBI of the day with a single to right to score cut the deficit 3-2.

ULM loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. Senior Justine LaBorde pushed the lead to 4-2 with a single to right field. Drader’s double to center field cleared the bases and extended the lead to 7-2. The Indians tagged on the eight run of the game off a triple to right center by senior Steve Lawler.

UTSA returns home for a three-game series against Sam Houston State May 12-14 at Roadrunner Field.
