Recruiting class tops in Southland Conference

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA women’s soccer program, which begins its inaugural season this fall, has claimed the top recruiting class in the Southland Conference, as announced bysoccerbuzz.com.

“It is an honor that others think highly of our recruiting class,” head coach Steve Ballard said. “SoccerBuzz.com does their homework and is great for women’s soccer. Recruiting is crucial and we are extremely excited to have this talented group of student-athletes join our program. We all need to work hard in order to reach the potential that Kristin and I think can exist on this team”

The Roadrunners have plenty of talent for the upcoming season with 23 players currently on the roster. UTSA has two transfer players with college experience in Junior College All-American goalkeeper Rachel Francis and All-SWAC forward Christine Walker, who played locally at Warren High School and Jackson State.

Incoming freshmen Chelsea Zimmerman, Kari Weiland, Christy Underwood and Erin Ussery played with the North Texas ODP state team. Zimmerman and Ussery come out of the strong Dallas Sting club program, which also sends Veronica Najera, Kimberly Selman and Katilyn Symons to UTSA. The Roadrunners have 17 players who were all-district performers in high school. Julie Kopp and Holli McGue, the lone out-of-state signees, are California natives. Both played with the MTV Roadrunners, who won two Super Y North American Championships.

UTSA opens its inaugural season against the Texas Longhorns at 7 p.m. on Aug. 18 in an exhibition match in Austin.
