Johnston named to SLC Men’s Golf All-Academic Team

PLANO, Texas - UTSA junior Matt Johnston has been named to the 2006 Capitol One Southland Conference (SLC) Men’s Golf All-Academic Team, the league office announced Monday.

Johnston, the 2005 SLC Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year, is a two-time all-academic and Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection. He owns a 3.61 grade point average while majoring in business. Johnston finished 27th at the 2006 SLC Championship while UTSA placed second. He concluded the year with a 75.07 scoring average in 27 rounds for third best on team, including a 75.33 fall average and a top-five finish at the Adams Cup of Newport.

Texas-Arlington’s Zack Reeves has been named the Capital One SLC Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year. Reeves, a hometown native of Arlington, sports a 3.32 grade point average in management. The sophomore was a first-team All-SLC pick after tying for fourth place at the 2006 SLC Championship last month. The two-year letterwinner averaged 72.55 over 36 rounds this season and helped the Mavs to an NCAA Tournament at-large berth. Reeves was named National Golfer of the Week by Golfweek.com after winning the Squire Creek Intercollegiate in October. The standout golfer also posted seven top 10 finishes and 10 top 20 finishes in 12 tournaments. He is currently President of UTA’s Student Advisory Committee.

Pat Collogan led Louisiana-Monroe with a 73.25 scoring average over 36 rounds, earning him 2006 All-SLC second-team merits. The sophomore was also a 2005 All-SLC third-team honoree. Collogan, a marketing major with a 3.82 GPA, shot a low round of 68 at Baylor and his top individual finish was fourth at North Texas and Kansas.

Brett Bergeron is a finance major with a perfect 4.00 GPA, the only candidate on the ballot with a flawless GPA. He participated in nine tournaments, averaging 74.62 for fourth-best on his team. Bergeron, a junior, was a All-SLC first-teamer in 2003-04 and All-SLC second team and Freshman of the Year pick in 2002-03.

Donny Schmitt was named to the 2006 All-SLC second team and earned SLC Men’s Golfer of the Week honors once. He placed seventh at the SLC Championship, had one top five finish and four top 10 showings with a 73.76 stroke average. Schmitt is majoring in marketing and has a 3.24 GPA.

The all-academic team honors student-athletes who were selected all-conference and/or named as a national all-academic recipient this year while also earning at least a 3.00 grade point average. Student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition. The student-athlete of the year is annually presented to the individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics and athletics. Nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average to go along with superior athletics achievement.
