Dallas Baptist handles UTSA, 12-3, in non-conference action

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA baseball team was defeated 12-3 by Dallas Baptist in its regular season finale Monday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners, who have dropped four of their last five games, are 36-20 overall, while the Patriots end their season with a 33-21 record.

Sophomore Mark Ruffin got the loss and evened his record to 3-3 on the year. Seniors Lee Todesco and J.R Voyles and junior Michael McKennon each collected two hits apiece. McKennon and Todesco also recorded one RBI on the day, while sophomore Marshal Davis picked up his 20th RBI of the season.

Senior Michael Gardner picked up his fifth win of the season and improved to 5-4. He went six innings, allowed three runs on six hits and struck out one batter. Senior Damian Gomez led DBU with three hits and two runs scored, while junior Drew Holden and senior Brad Boles recorded two RBI apiece.

Dallas Baptist scored the first two runs of the game, to go up 2-0. Junior Matt Tucker smacked a solo home in the top of the second. In the third inning, when sophomore Austin Krum reached base via a walk, then advanced to second on a stolen base. Senior Cody Montgomery ripped a single to moved Krum to third base. Senior Jeremy Goldschmeding RBI groundout to third allowed for Krum to score the second run of game.

UTSA responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Davis started off the inning with a walk. Senior J.R. Voyles snapped a 0-for-16 slump with a base hit to right field and move Davis to score. McKennon and Todesco back-to-back RBI singles plated the runners to tie the game 2-all.

The Patriots regained the lead 3-2 in the fourth inning. Gomez ripped a one-out double to left field, then Boles’ two-out RBI single brought home Gomez from second base. However, the Roadrunners tied the game 3-3 when Davis hammered a two-out single up the middle to bring home the tying run.

Dallas Baptist broke the 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of fifth inning to give DBU a 6-3 edge. Holder’s two-run homer to left field highlighted the inning. In the top of the ninth,

DBU opened up the game with six runs scored. After recording the first out of the frame, the Roadrunners could not get of the inning, as they walked five consecutive batters, with three runs coming off those walks. A sacrifice fly by Boles scored the fourth run of the inning and an UTSA error scored the fifth and sixth run.

UTSA travels to Beaumont for the 2006 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament Wednesday-Saturday, May 24-27 at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
