ARLINGTON, Texas – Junior Veronica Silva (right) led a dominating performance by the UTSA women’s track and field team in the 800 meters in grabbing her first conference crown, helping the Roadrunners finish fourth at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships held Monday at Maverick Stadium.

Silva clocked a 2:12.79 to lead a 32-point production by UTSA in the 800m as the Roadrunners placed five runners in the top six spots. Junior Diane Smith took second in 2:14.29, senior Rita Lambert was third in 2:15.57 and freshman Brittany Britton claimed fourth in 2:20.23. For good measure, junior Samantha Burgess grabbed sixth in 2:21.44.

Silva’s win was the first by a Roadrunner in the 800m at an SLC Outdoor Championship and the first in a distance event since Jennifer DeBrecht won the 3,000m in 1997. UTSA now has 44 SLC individual or relay crowns.

As a team, UTSA finished fourth for the second straight year with 85 points, despite not having three-time All-American and last year’s high point scorer Ryanne Dupree and defending long jump champion Morgan Moszee.

Sam Houston State won its second consecutive team title with 164 points, followed by Texas State (135), Stephen F. Austin (101.5), UTSA (85), Texas-Arlington (68), Lamar (63), Northwestern State (58), Southeastern Louisiana (52.5), Louisiana-Monroe (44), McNeese State (40) and Nicholls State (8).

In the field event finals held in the afternoon, senior Natasha Ramos placed fifth in the discus with a 146-3 measure. She finished the meet with nine points after taking fourth in the shot put on Sunday.

UTSA scored 10 points in the first three running finals. The 4x100m relay team of freshman Shanelle Slaughter, sophomore Brittany Epps, senior Kandace Traywick and freshman Ashley Jackson finished seventh with a 47.23 clocking.

Junior Hope Jimenez posted a fifth-place finish in the 1,500m in 4:49.56, while fellow junior Lyndsey Sidney raced to a regional qualifier in the 100m hurdles with a fifth-place time of 13.93.

The Roadrunners added big points (32) with the dominating performance in the 800m to jump into fourth place with 76 points behind Sam Houston (135), Texas State (102) and Stephen F. Austin (79.5).

Senior Demetria Holmes and Sidney contributed five points in the 400m hurdles as Holmes took fifth in 1:02.87 and Sidney grabbed eighth in 1:06.26. Jackson added a seventh-place time of 25.02 in the 200m and the 4x400m relay team of Smith, Silva, Britton and Holmes finished seventh in 3:51.28.

Qualified individuals will represent UTSA at the NCAA Midwest Regional on May 26-27 in Austin.
