ARLINGTON, Texas – The Wolfe brothers – senior Bryan (right) and freshman Tommy – finished one-two in the decathlon and junior Benson Cheserek took runner-up honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead a strong day two effort by the UTSA men’s track and field team Sunday at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships held at Maverick Stadium.
The Roadrunners got 21 points in the decathlon from the Wolfes and senior Joseph Burton, who finished sixth and broke the school record in the javelin during the 10-event competition. UTSA stands third in the team standings after eight scored events with 51 points in a tight race with Stephen F. Austin (54) and defending champion Sam Houston State (52). Southeastern Louisiana (40) and Texas State (34) round out the top five.
Bryan Wolfe scored 6,887 points to win his first individual conference crown, while Tommy was second in his first conference decathlon with 6,595. Bryan held on to a slim first-day lead, adding to his 3,667 points scored on Saturday with marks of 15.05 in the 110m hurdles, 122-2 in the discus, 14-5 Ľ in the pole vault, 177-2 in the javelin and 5:34.22 in the 1,500m.
Tommy posted second-day marks of 15.97 in the hurdles, 132-8 in the discus, 14-1 Ľ in the pole vault, 148-5 in the javelin and 5:32.05 in the 1,500m.
Burton (left) posted 4,026 points for sixth place and broke the school record of 207-10 set by Ben Martinez in 2003 with an NCAA regional-qualifying toss of 208-11.
Cheserek raced to a runner-up finish in the grueling 3,000m steeplechase, clocking a 9:16.74 to contribute eight points to the UTSA cause. Nick Kay of McNeese State won in 9:14.05.
In other final action in the field Sunday, sophomore Steven Brown leaped to a personal-best and regional-qualifying distance of 24-8 Ľ for sixth place in the long jump. Sophomore Luke Johnson turned in a seventh-place measure of 52-1 Ľ in the shot put and freshman Carvey Evans placed seventh in the high jump with a 6-6 ľ clearance.
It was a strong day for the Roadrunners in preliminary qualifying on the track as UTSA advanced 17 to Monday’s finals.
Sophomore Mthobisi Baloyi led a strong contingent in the middle distances, posting the top qualifier in the 800m (1:53.94) and 1,500m (3:56.85). Junior Larry Brooks and senior Justin Pitchford also advanced in the 800m with the second (1:53.95) and third (1:53.96) fastest qualifiers, while junior Adrian Vargas (1:55.64) and sophomore Eric Miller (1:55.71) also survived. Baloyi, Cheserek (3:57.79) and senior Chris Layman (4:00.31) advanced in the 1,500m.
Sophomore William Vese skimmed the 110m hurdles with the fastest time of the day, a regional-qualifying 14.03, while senior Marques Mitchell also met the regional standard with the fourth-best time, a 14.24.
UTSA displayed impressive depth in the long sprints as junior Scott Briscoe advanced in both the 200m (21.52) and 400m (47.56), while Brown (21.15) moved on in the 200m and freshman Gaston Griffin (47.83) and senior David Burnett (48.36) qualified for the 400m final. Senior T.R. Sissel turned in the third-fastest qualifier in the 400m hurdles, a 52.82.
Monday’s final day gets underway with field events at 1 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m.
