ARLINGTON, Texas – Senior Kandace Traywick (right) and sophomore Ashley Allen finished two-three in the heptathlon to lead a solid day two effort by the UTSA women’s track and field team Sunday at the SLC Outdoor Championships held at Maverick Stadium.
Traywick demolished her previous personal-best with an NCAA provisional-qualifying point total of 5,127 to finish second, while Allen met the provisional standard for the second time this season with a third-place total of 5,042.
Traywick followed a solid day one effort with three solid marks on Sunday. She opened with a career-best 18-7 ľ leap in the long jump and briefly took the overall lead in the nine-person field. Traywick followed with a 114-9 measure in the javelin and a 2:27.92 clocking in the 800 meters.
Allen moved into third place with an 18-1 ˝ mark in the long jump, a 126-0 effort in the javelin and a time of 2:30.69 in the 800m. Sophomore Kari Michalik finished seventh with 4,258 points as UTSA received 16 points in the event. Crystal Chang of Stephen F. Austin took first with 5,255 points.
On other final action on Sunday, senior Natasha Ramos placed fourth in the shot put with a 44-4 Ľ mark, while sophomore Brittany Epps leaped 19-8 for sixth in the long jump. Senior Karilyn Petty finished seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase with an 11:37.58 clocking.
UTSA sits fourth in the team standings with 40 points behind defending champion Sam Houston State (76), Stephen F. Austin (55) and Texas State (34). Southeastern Louisiana (23) rounds out the top five.
In preliminary qualifying action on the track, UTSA advanced 10 to Monday’s finals, highlighted by a dominating effort in the 800m and a pair of regional qualifiers from junior Lyndsey Sidney.
Junior Diane Smith led a solid showing by the Roadrunners in the half-mile with the fastest time of the day, a 2:16.83. Junior Veronica Silva and senior Rita Lambert posted the second (2:17.09) and third (2:17.63) best times on the day, while freshman Brittany Britton (2:17.99), junior Samantha Burgess (2:19.93) and senior Meghan Chance (2:20.65) also advanced.
Sidney met the regional standard in both hurdles races, posting the third-fastest qualifier in the 100m hurdles, a personal-best 13.81, and the second-fastest time in the 400m hurdles, a season-best 1:00.81.
Senior Demetria Holmes and freshman Ashley Jackson also moved on to Monday in the 400m hurdles (1:03.07) and 200m (24.33), respectively.
Monday’s finals get underway with field events at 1 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m.
