SAN ANTONIO – Senior lefty Caleb Barton (right) went seven strong innings en route to recording his first win of the year as the UTSA baseball team completed its third sweep of the season with a 7-1 victory over Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners extend their winning streak to four games and improve to 35-16 overall and 19-8 in SLC play, while the Bearkats drop to 23-27 and 12-15 in league action.

Barton scattered four hits over seven innings, allowed one run, three walks and punched out two batters. Junior Josh Blakley and senior Noah Tritz made relief appearances for the Runners. Blakley tossed a scoreless eighth inning, while Tritz got out of a bases loaded jam to end the game.

Offensively, UTSA dominated the series with 28 runs scored, hammering 36 hits. Seniors J.R. Voyles and Lee Todesco and freshman James Keithley (left) went 2-for-4 on day. Keithley drove in a game-high three runs and scored twice. Voyles and Todesco each scored once. Freshman Michael Rockett went deep for the fourth time this season, with a two-run homer.

Junior Luke Prihoda got the loss for Sam Houston State and dripped his record to 3-6 on the year. He went five and one-third innings, allowed six runs on seven hits with two strike outs and gave up a home run. Senior Dustin Martin was the only Bearkat to collect an RBI for the entire series.

UTSA jumped early on Sam Houston State 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Todesco started the frame with a single to right field. Keithley’s RBI double down the left field line scored Todesco. Junior Ryan Saltzgaber smacked a two-out, RBI-single to left to plate Keithley.

In the top of the third inning, the Bearkats ended a 16-inning scoreless drought when Martin ripped a two-out single to center to plate the first run of the series and make the score 2-1.

The Runners responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to increase their lead 6-1. Rockett’s two-run homer to left field highlighted the inning.

In the eighth inning, UTSA added one run courtesy of two Bearkats errors that scored sophomore Phillip Allen to give the Roadrunners a 7-1 advantage.

UTSA travels to Edinburg for a non-conference match up against Texas-Pan American on Tuesday, May 16, at 6 p.m.
