ARLINGTON, Texas – Led by a two-three finish in the hammer throw from sophomore Luke Johnson and senior Rob Stager (right), the UTSA men’s track and field team is in fourth place after day one of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships held at Maverick Stadium.
Johnson and Stager combined for 14 points in shattering the school record set by Johnson earlier this season. Johnson unleashed a 172-1 measure for runner-up honors, bettering his previous personal best of 166-10 posted at the Rice Twilight on April 29. Stager also went above 170 feet with a third-place effort of 171-6 to demolish his former PR of 161-1 turned in at the Rice Bayou Classic on April 1.
Robert Melin of Texas State set a meet and stadium record with his winning throw of 177-10.
In other action, senior Joseph Burton scratched for a point in the javelin throw with a 192-9 measure. Sophomore Nick Perez took 10th in the 10,000 meters with a 35:09.85 clocking.
UTSA is in fourth place after three events with 15 points. Defending champion Sam Houston got 27 of its 30 first-day points in the 10,000m to lead the team race. Southeastern Louisiana is in second with 25 thanks to a strong showing in the javelin, while Northwestern State is in second with 16.
UTSA is in prime position for big points in the decathlon as the Wolfe brothers – senior Bryan and freshman Tommy – are sitting one-two after the first five events. Bryan scored 3,677 points, while Tommy is close behind with 3,577. Burton is in sixth with 2,093.
Day two of the SLC Outdoor continues Sunday at Maverick Stadium.
