ARLINGTON, Texas – UTSA sophomore Chelsea Malina (right) posted a top-five finish in the javelin and a trio of Roadrunners are in contention in the heptathlon after day one of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships held Saturday at Maverick Stadium.
Malina launched a personal-best throw of 134-6 to finish fifth in the javelin, scoring four points for the Roadrunners. She bettered her previous best of 131-5 recorded at the Texas Twilight on April 22. Roshunda Betts of Sam Houston won the event with a throw of 168-11.
Senior Kandace Traywick and sophomores Ashley Allen and Kari Michalik are in position to score points for UTSA after the first four events of the heptathlon. Traywick is in third place with 3,084 points, followed closely by Allen in fourth with 3,015. Michalik, in her first year competing in the grueling seven-event competition, is in seventh with 2,619. Amy Fledderman of Southeastern Louisiana leads with 3,104 points.
In other action, senior Natasha Ramos finished 12th in the hammer throw with a 141-8 effort.
Defending champion Sam Houston State leads the team race after the first three events with 25 points, followed by Stephen F. Austin and Texas State with 23 and Southeastern Louisiana with 14. UTSA stands eighth with four points.
Day two of the SLC Outdoor continues Sunday at Maverick Stadium.
