Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Junior pitcher Blake Brannon recorded his first shutout of the season as the UTSA baseball team run-ruled Sam Houston State for the second straight day with an 11-0 victory Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners, winners of three consecutive games, improved to 34-16 overall and 18-8 in SLC play, while the Bearkats dropped to 23-26 and 12-14 in conference play. The 18 wins is the most SLC victories in UTSA baseball history.

Brannon scattered three hits over seven innings of work, struck out three batters, walked one and did not allow a run. UTSA’s pitching staff has held Sam Houston State’s offense to 14 scoreless innings. The Brenham, Texas, native collected his second straight complete game.

UTSA’s offense scored 11 runs on 12 hits on the day. Junior Michael McKennon went 1-for-3, but his one hit was a three-run blast over the right field wall, his 10th home run of the season. Senior J.R. Voyles led four Roadrunners with at least two hits. Voyles also scored a game-high three runs, while sophomore Marshal Davis and senior Lee Todesco scored twice.

Senior Zach Adkisson got the loss for SHSU and dropped to 4-4 on the year. He pitched three and one-third innings, gave up six runs on five hits, walked four and fanned two Roadrunners. Sam Houston State had three players collect a hit on the day.

UTSA opened the game with a 4-0 lead after the first inning. McKennon’s three-run bomb to right field highlighted the inning.

In the fourth inning, the Runners pushed their lead to 8-0, as they sent nine batters to the plate. Sophomore Phillip Allen started off the frame with a walk, then advanced to third off a steal and throwing error by Sam Houston. Allen came across the plate off the second miscue by SHSU. With two outs, Todesco smacked a single up the middle to scored Voyles, who reached on a walk. Freshman James Keithley’s RBI triple brought home Todesco all the way from first and gave UTSA a 7-0 edge. Freshman Michael Rockett RBI single capped off the Roadrunner inning.

The Runners added three more runs on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, giving UTSA a 11-0 cushion. Allen led off with a walk, then a Davis single and a Bearkat miscue moved Allen the third. A wild pitch by Sam Houston State’s pitcher allowed Allen to score. An RBI-double down the right field line plated Davis from second, while Keithley collected his second RBI with a single left.

In the seventh, Brannon closed the door on the Bearkats with a 1-2-3 inning.
