UTSA pounds Sam Houston State, 10-0, in SLC action

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA baseball team pounded out 10 runs and 16 hits en route to a 10-0 win over Sam Houston State Bearkats Friday afternoon in Southland Conference action at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners improved to 33-16 overall and 17-8 in SLC play, while the Bearkats dropped to 23-25 on the year and 12-14 in league play. With the win, UTSA keeps pace with first-place McNeese State by remaining one game back. The Cowboys play host to Northwestern State Demons tonight at 7 p.m. in Lake Charles, La.

Junior pitcher Josh Ruffin (right) collected his league leading fifth complete game and fourth shutout of the season. Ruffin faced no more than four batters per inning, as he recorded his eighth win of the season and improving to 8-2 overall. The Humble, Texas, native tossed seven scoreless innings, scattered four hits and struck out five.

Every batter in the UTSA lineup collected at least one hit on the day. Junior Ryan Saltzgaber led the way with three hits, one run scored and drove in a run. Junior Michael McKennon went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, while five different UTSA players added two hits apiece.

Junior Tim Gray suffered his third loss of the season and dipped his mark to 7-3. He went five and two-third innings, allowed eight runs on 11 hits, walked two and fanned three batters. Sam Houston State’s offense managed only four hits on the day.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, senior J.R. Voyles led off with a single to right field, then McKennon walk and senior Lee Todesco loaded the base with a single right. Freshman Michael Rockett drew a walk to bring home the first run. Back-to-back singles by sophomore Zach Etheredge and Saltzgaber pushed across the second and third run of the inning, giving UTSA a 3-0 lead. In the fifth inning, the Roadrunners extended their lead 4-0. Sophomore Marshal Davis started the inning with a double to right field, then came around to score on McKennon’s single to center field.

UTSA scored five runs on six hits and a Bearkat error in the sixth. The Roadrunners plated all of their runs with two outs left in the frame. McKennon two-run single up the middle capped off the Runners inning.

The Runners closed out the game in the seventh inning. Saltzgaber and sophomore Phillip Allen led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Voyles was intentionally walked to load the base. With one out, McKennon (left) ended the game with a sacrifice fly to center field, which allowed for Saltzgaber to score the 10th run of the game.
