Ruffin’s complete game guides UTSA to 7-1 win at Southeastern Louisiana

HAMMOND, La. – Junior right handed pitcher Josh Ruffin’s 62-of-99 pitches went for strikes as he led the UTSA baseball team to a 7-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

With the win, the Roadrunners picked up their 20th victory of the season (20-11) and moved to 7-4 in SLC play. Meanwhile, the Lions dropped to 13-16 and 4-7 in conference play.

Ruffin tossed his third complete game of the season, improving to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. He allowed just one run on nine hits, walked one and struck out one.

Juniors Michael McKennon and Brandon Koger each posted three hits on the day. Koger also collected two runs batted in and sophomore Marshal Davis led UTSA with a season-high three RBI. Senior J.R Voyles, sophomore Zach Etheredge and Davis tacked on two hits apiece.

Chris Cappo suffered his first loss on the year for SLU and dipped to 2-1. Ty Summerlin was one of two batters for SLU with a multi-hit day. Summerlin went 3-for-4 and collected an RBI, while Dillon Sudduth had a 2-for-3 day and scored the only run of the game for the Lions.

After going scoreless through the first five innings, UTSA put up a four-spot in the top of the sixth. Freshman James Keithley started off with a single to center field. Freshman Michael Rockett got on base with a bunt single and Etheredge loaded the bases with a single up the middle. Koger’s double to right center plated Keithley and Rockett. A passed ball allowed Etheredge to score from third. Sophomore Marshal Davis’ sacrifice fly to center scored the fourth run of the inning.

The Lions got on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sudduth led off the inning with a single to left field. A sacrifice bunt moved Sudduth to second. Summerlin’s RBI-single to right field, scored Sudduth from second base.

The Roadrunners added two more runs in the seventh inning. Etheredge began the inning with a walk. Sophomore Phillip Allen singled to left with two outs and Davis’ single to left field scored Etheredge. Voyles’ second base hit of the day plated Allen from third base to make the score 6-1.

In the top of the ninth, the Runners extended their lead to 7-1 when Davis picked up his second base hit of the day to score Allen, who reached via a fielder’s choice.

UTSA and Southeastern Louisiana conclude the three-game set at 1 p.m. Sunday at Alumni Field.
