UTSA sweep, Texas State losses secure third straight SLC regular season crown

SAN ANTONIO – Just hours after sweeping its fourth straight weekend series with a 10-2 run-ruling of Texas-Arlington, the UTSA softball team learned it has captured a third consecutive Southland Conference regular season title by virtue of Louisiana-Monroe’s doubleheader sweep of Texas State Sunday afternoon in Monroe, La.

The Roadrunners (33-12) finished off UTA Sunday at home to run their conference record to 22-5, tying the school record set in 2000 for most victories in a 27-game league season. With an .815 winning percentage, UTSA needed first place Texas State (18-3, .857) to drop two games of an original three-game set at Louisiana-Monroe that was reduced to a twinbill thanks to rain Saturday.

The Indians pulled through for 3-1 and 2-1 victories, getting a bases-loaded groundout in the top of the seventh to end the series. The two losses dropped the Bobcats to 18-5 in the SLC, a .783 winning percentage.

UTSA captured its first-ever conference title in 2004 with a 20-6 mark and made it back-to-back with a 21-5 season last year.

The Roadrunners now enter the SLC Tournament next Friday-Sunday, May 5-7, in Natchitoches, La., as the No. 1 seed for the third straight season. They will face six-seed Nicholls State on Friday at 11 a.m. in the first round.
