HOUSTON – UTSA sophomore Luke Johnson (right) broke his own school record in the hammer throw and junior Larry Brooks posted a career best and NCAA regional qualifier in the 800 meters to highlight action for the men’s track and field team Saturday evening at the Rice Twilight.

Johnson had a busy meet, posting top-five finishes in the shot put, discus and hammer. He measured 166-10 for a third place showing among collegiate competitors in the hammer, bettering his school standard of 166-6 set last year. Johnson also recorded a career mark of 161-7 in the discus and a 52-3 ľ effort to finish fifth in both the discus and shot put, respectively.

Brooks made the visit to his hometown a memorable one, turning in a personal best time of 1:49.64 to win the 800m ahead of Pablo Solares of Rice (1:50.33). He met the regional standard of 1:50.40 for the second time this season and inched closer to Sean Goetsch’s school record of 1:48.68 set in 1995.

Displaying impressive depth in the half-mile, sophomore Mthobisi Baloyi and senior Justin Pitchford were close behind Brooks in fifth (1:53.55) and sixth (1:53.80), respectively.

Sophomore Steven Brown breezed to a season-best 21.38 to finish second overall and first among collegians in the 200m, while senior T.R. Sissel was the top collegian and second overall in the 400m with a season-best 48.07 clocking.

Sophomore William Vese clocked a 14.41 to take third in the 110m hurdles and junior Benson Cheserek was fifth in the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:24.71. Senior David Burnett clocked a 22.05 to finish third in the early 200m race, while senior Chris Layman ran 1:55.59 to place third in the early 800m.

In women’s action, senior Karilyn Petty was second in the 3,000m steeplechase with an 11:48.46 effort.
