UTSA scores 4-2 win over top seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to advance to SLC Tournament finals

ARLINGTON – The No. 4-seed UTSA men’s tennis team knocked off the No. 1-seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christ to advance to the Southland Conference Tournament finals Saturday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center. The Roadrunners return to the SLC finals for the second year in a row with the win over the Islanders.

UTSA began the day taking the doubles points with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Anthony Portois (right) and Hetori Chaves teamed up to score an 8-3 win over A&M-Corpus Christi’s Raul Morant-Rivas and Jose Zunio at No. 2. The Runners sealed the doubles point when Adam Becker and Robin Fernandes paired up for the 8-4 victory at the No. 3 position.

In singles action, UTSA won at the Nos. 2, 3 and 5 singles. SLC Freshman of the Year Andre Moreira got UTSA rolling with his 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 2 slot over TAMU-CC’s Andrey Kumantsov.

The Roadrunners took a 2-1 advantage when Portois came off the court after beating Mikhail Pavlov in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). Fernandes’ (left) clinched the match for UTSA, scoring a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jan Cingel at the No. 5 singles.

UTSA will face No. 3 seed Texas-Arlington on Sunday at 3 p.m.
