UTSA escapes with 6-5 win in extra innings over Stephen F. Austin

SAN ANTONIO – Freshman James Keithley’s (right) game winning single to left gave the UTSA baseball team a 6-5 win over Stephen F. Austin in extra innings Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action at Roadrunner Field.

With the win, the Roadrunners improved to 28-14 overall and 14-6 in SLC play, while SFA dropped to 8-38 overall and 3-20 in league play. UTSA remains one game back in the loss column to league-leading Lamar.

Senior J.R. Volyes and Keithley paced UTSA with two hits apiece. Voyles drove in a team-high two runs, while Keithley and junior Michael McKennon collected one RBI apiece.

Sophomore pitcher Mark Ruffin (left) posted his second win on the year and upped his mark to 2-1. He went two-thirds of an inning, allowed no runs and no hits.

Sophomore David Miller suffered his third loss of the season and remains winless on the year. Junior David Jeans led SFA’s offense with a 3-for-6 day at the dish and collected a game-high three RBI.

UTSA scored first in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Marshal Davis led off with a walk. A sacrifice bunt by Voyles moved Davis to second. McKennon picked up his 36th RBI of the season to score Davis from second.

SFA took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Zachary Gardner reached base via a triple to right field. The Lumberjacks pulled within one off an RBI single by David Jeans. Junior Chase Sadler’s single to left field gave Stephen F. Austin the lead. \

The Roadrunners knotted the game at 2-all in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Ryan Saltzgaber reached base courtesy of an SFA error, then went to third off another Lumberjack miscue. A passed ball by SFA pitcher Brian Steinocher allowed Saltzgaber to score the tying run.

The Roadrunners took the lead at 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sophomore Zach Etheredge and Saltzgaber reached on back-to-back singles. Davis’ groundout plated Etheredge, while Voyles’ single to the right field scored the fourth run of the game.

The Lumberjacks scored three runs in the eighth inning to give SFA a 5-4 lead. Jeans’ two-run single highlighted the inning.

UTSA rallied with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Junior Mitch Ponza smacked a single to right then Davis drew a walk, putting runners on first and second. Voyles ripped a single past the shortstop, to bring Ponza home from second and tie game, 5-5.

In the 11th inning, the Roadrunners had runners on first and second with no outs, but SFA made a call to the pen and brought in sophomore pitcher David Miller. Miller got Voyles to hit into a rare triple play and end UTSA’s threat in the inning.

In the bottom of the 12th, Keithley’s game winning single to left score freshman Josh Barnett, who came in to pinch hit for Todesco, from third.

UTSA and SFA conclude the three-game set at 1 p.m. Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
