DES MOINES, Iowa – The UTSA women’s shuttle hurdle relay team grabbed second place Saturday to highlight action over the final two days of the 97th annual Drake Relays held at Drake Stadium.
The foursome of junior Lyndsey Sidney (left), sophomore Ashley Allen and seniors Kandace Traywick and Demetria Holmes clocked a 57.20 for runner-up honors behind Eastern Michigan’s 55.76 in the unique race featuring four 100-meter hurdle legs contested back and forth on the main straightaway. The 57.20 is a season best, bettering the 58.21 posted at the UTSA Relays in March.
The 4x800m relay team of juniors Diane Smith, Hope Jimenez and Veronica Silva and senior Rita Lambert posted a top-10 finish, placing sixth with a 9:00.06 clocking. The sprint medley team of freshman Shanelle Slaughter, sophomore Brittany Epps, Smith and Silva took 11th in 4:01.59, while the 4x200m relay of Slaughter, Epps, junior Morgan Moszee and freshman Ashley Jackson carried the baton to a 13th-place time of 1:38.79.
On Thursday, Allen continued UTSA’s recent trend of heptathlon success at this prestigious meet. The Jim Ned High product posted a personal-best and NCAA provisional-qualifying point total of 5,076 in finishing sixth. Senior All-American Ryanne Dupree, who is redshirting this outdoor season, was the two-time defending champion in the event.
The Roadrunners are off until the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships on May 13-15 in Arlington, Texas.
