Roadrunners run-rule Lumberjacks, 14-4, in SLC action

SAN ANTONIO – Junior Ryan Saltzgaber (right) posted a career day with four hits and three RBI and blasted a solo home run to lead the UTSA baseball team to a 14-4 rout over Stephen F. Austin in Southland Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

With the win, the Runners end their two-game skid and improve to 27-14 overall and 13-6 in SLC play. The Lumberjacks, losers of five straight games, dropped to 8-37 on the year and 3-19 in conference play.

Saltzgaber was one of five UTSA players to collect two or more hits on the day. Sophomore Marshal Davis and freshman James Keithley each recorded three hits and two RBI apiece, while junior Michael McKennon also tagged on three hits in five at-bats. Davis, Keithley and freshman Michael Rockett collected two RBI apiece.

Junior Josh Ruffin picked up his seventh win on the year and improved to 7-1 overall, while remaining unblemished in league play with a 5-0 mark. He went six and one-third innings, allowed four runs, scattered seven hits and struck out five batters. Junior Josh Blakley came in relief to finish off the game for the Runners. He tossed one and two-third innings of shutout baseball.

Erich Lehmann was tagged with his third loss of the season (5-3). He pitched five-plus innings, gave up six runs off 11 hits, while striking out five Runners.

Stephen F. Austin jumped on UTSA early when junior Chase Sadler went deep for the fourth time on the year in the top of the second. In the bottom of the frame, the Roadrunners answered with two runs to make the score 2-1. Davis smacked a two-out single to drive in Keithley and sophomore Zach Etheredge.

The Runners added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Senior J.R. Voyles reached on a\n SFA error and McKennon’s double to left center plated Voyles home. A wild pitch by the Lumberjacks allowed McKennon to score and give UTSA a 4-1 cushion. UTSA tagged on a run the fourth when Saltzgaber got a base hit off a bunt single, then junior Brandon Koger advanced Saltzgaber to second with a sacrifice bunt. Voyles’ RBI single down the right field line scored Saltzgaber.

In the sixth inning, UTSA pushed its lead to 6-1. Davis singled to left with two outs in the inning, then moved to second on Voyles’ walk. McKennon collected his 35th RBI of the season with a single to left field.

SFA trimmed the lead to 6-4 with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Lumberjacks loaded up the bases on three straight singles. Freshman Gabriel Garcia-Serrano cleared the bases with a laser down the left field line.

The Roadrunners used the long ball in the bottom half of the seventh to increase their 9-4, when Rockett (left) belted a two-run shot over the left field wall. With one out in the inning, Saltzgaber hammered his second home run of the season.

UTSA ended the game in the eighth with five runs off five hits to run-rule SFA 14-4. Salzgaber’s double to left center highlighted the Roadrunner inning.
