Roadrunners win seven events at Texas Twilight

AUSTIN, Texas – The UTSA men’s and women’s track and field teams won seven events and sophomore Steven Brown punched his ticket to the NCAA Midwest Regional in the long jump Saturday at the Texas Twilight held at Myers Stadium.

Brown leaped to a personal-best and regional-qualifying mark of 24-6 ˝ to finish second in the men’s long jump. His performance moved him into second place on UTSA’s all-time list behind Tomm Wisloff’s school record 25-6 ˝ posted in 1986. Texas’ Ron Hill won the event with a 24-7 effort.

Meanwhile, the Roadrunners made their name known elsewhere on the track and in the field competing against the nationally-ranked Longhorns, Oklahoma, Texas State, Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. UTSA won six events and posted 38 top-five finishes in the non-scored meet.

The men won five events, highlighted by senior David Burnett’s career performance in the 400 meters. The Corpus Christi native circled in 47.70, a personal-best time that put him first among collegiate competitors and third overall behind former Oklahoma All-American and Jamaican Olympian Michael Blackwood (45.77) and Marvin Essor (46.28).

Senior Justin Pitchford was the top collegian in the 800m, just nipping his previous personal best of 1:51.30 posted last weekend with a 1:51.29 clocking. Jacob Hernandez, running unattached, won in 1:50.22.

Senior Joseph Burton registered a new career best, as well, topping the 200-foot barrier in the javelin with a 200-1 measure to grab gold. His mark was just two inches shy of the regional qualifier of 202-1.

Sophomore William Vese posted the men’s other victory, racing to a 14.37 clocking as the top collegian in the 110m hurdles. Former Texas All-American Jermaine Cooper was first overall in 13.81.

Burnett, senior T.R. Sissel, junior Larry Brooks and freshman Gaston Griffin concluded the meet by winning the 4x400m relay going away. The quartet clocked a 3:13.20 to finish comfortably ahead of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s 3:15.16.

Senior Karilyn Petty won her second race on this track in April, covering the women’s 2,000m steeplechase in 7:19.99 to finish just ahead of Texas’ Larkin Geyer (7:20.34). Petty also won the 3,000m steeple’s “B” section at the Texas Relays on April 5.

Senior Natasha Ramos was victorious among collegians in the women’s shot put. She measure 44-3 ˝ for second overall behind Abby Ruston, who was competing unattached. Ramos also finished second in the discus with a 137-7 performance.

In other action for the men, senior Marques Mitchell was second in the 110m hurdles with a 14.43 clocking, while senior Chris Layman grabbed third in the 800m in 1:56.18. Freshman Jake Story cleared 6-6 ľ for third in the high jump and sophomore Luke Johnson was third in the shot put with a 54-1 Ľ effort.

Junior Veronica Silva recorded a career-best time of 2:10.42 for third place in the women’s 800m, while sophomore Chelsea Malina earned runner-up honors in the javelin with a 131-5 effort. Sophomore Ashley Allen was close behind in third with a 125-9 mark, while sophomore Shantel Buggs was third in the discus with a 131-4 measure and senior Kandace Traywick was third in the 100m hurdles in 14.25. The 4x100m relay team of freshman Shanelle Slaughter, sophomore Brittany Epps, junior Morgan Moszee and freshman Ashley Jackson finished as runners-up in 46.27.

Senior All-American Ryanne Dupree, competing unattached, finished second in the 100m hurdles with a 13.48.

Both teams are in action next week as the women travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the prestigious Drake Relays while the men head to Houston for the Rice Twilight.
