Allen posts NCAA qualifier in Drake Relays heptathlon

DES MOINES, Iowa – UTSA sophomore Ashley Allen (right) met the NCAA provisional-qualifying standard in the women’s heptathlon to highlight action for the women’s track and field team Thursday at the Drake Relays held at Drake Stadium.

Allen scored a career-best 5,076 points to finish sixth overall and fifth among collegiate competitors in the two-day, seven-event competition. She scored 3,006 points on Wednesday, posting marks of 14.62 in the 100-meter hurdles, 5-4 Ľ in the high jump, 36-1 ˝ in the shot put and 26.58 in the 200 meters. Allen had a solid second day, leaping to a 17-7 measure in the long jump, tossing 124-0 in the javelin and clocking a 2:22.90 in the 800m.

Senior Kandace Traywick also turned in a career point total in the heptathlon, scoring 4,904 to finish ninth. She posted marks of 14.09 in the 100m hurdles, 5-1 ľ in the high jump, 33-5 ľ in the shot put, 26.20 in the 200m, 17-8 Ľ in the long jump, 118-6 in the javelin and 2:33.24 in the 800m.

Danielle McNay won the heptathlon with 5,422 points, followed by the top collegian Erica Lynn of Iowa State (5,386). Two-time defending champion and UTSA All-American Ryanne Dupree is taking a redshirt season and will be back to try for a third title in 2007.

Allen’s point total surpassed the provisional mark of 5,000 and ranks her as the No. 3 performer in school history behind Dupree (5,575) and former All-American Rhonda Ray (5,323). Traywick’s 4,904 betters her previous PR of 4,793 posted at the UTSA Relays in March and makes her the No. 4 performer in school history.

The Drake Relays continue Friday and Saturday.
