UTSA’s Moreira collects SLC Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference honors

All-conference team

PLANO - The UTSA men’s team placed three in the 2006 Southland Conference all-conference team with freshman Andrea Moreira (right) picking up SLC Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference at the No. 2 singles, announced by the conference office Wednesday morning.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Southeastern Louisiana each had nine student-athletes receive either singles or doubles all-conference merits, while UTSA and Texas-Arlington had three student-athletes earn all-conference honors.

Joining Morant-Rivas, men’s Player of the Year, on the All-SLC first team as an automatic qualifier is freshman Andre Moreira of UTSA, sophomore Matthieu Leboucher of Southeastern Louisiana, sophomore Jan Cingel of TAMCC and sophomore Vladimir Paunic of SLU. Senior Niels Buksik of Texas-Arlington was voted to the first team at No. 6 singles by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.

Moreira was undefeated, 4-0, at No. 2 singles while Leboucher and Cingel went 3-0 at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Moreira was also named the SLC Freshman of the Year, only the second player in UTSA men’s tennis history to earn this honor. Senior teammate Jonas Hoglund was the other in 2003. Producing the only flawless SLC record was Paunic. The sophomore from Novi Sad, Serbia went 6-0 at No. 5 singles verses SLC opponents.

Joining UTSA’s Moreira’s on the All-SLC first-team is the Roadrunners No. 3 doubles tandem of Joe Olfindo (left) and Adam Becker. Olfindo, a senior, and Becker, a sophomore, were tagged as automatic all-conference picks after totaling a 4-0 mark.
