Texas-Arlington avoids sweep with four-run eighth in 5-3 win over UTSA

ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas-Arlington scored four runs in the eighth inning to rally for the 5-3 win over the UTSA baseball team, who’s six-game came to an end, Sunday afternoon at the Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington, Texas.

UTSA dropped to 26-13 overall and 12-6 in conference play, while UTA improved to 19-24 on the year and 12-7 in SLC play.

Senior left handed pitcher Caleb Barton suffered his fourth loss of the season. He tossed seven innings, allowed four runs off five hits, stuck out four and walked two. Freshman Michael Rockett led the way with team-highs three hits and two runs batted in. Senior Lee Todesco went 1-for-3 on the day, while collecting his team leading 36th RBI of the season.

For the Mavericks, starter Kyle Gainley went three full innings, allowed three runs, struck out four, scattered five hits and walked three, but the no decision. Reliever Chris Taylor came in the game for Gainley in the fourth inning and has held UTSA’s offense scoreless over the next six innings, including five consecutive 1-2-3 innings. Taylor picked up his second win of the season. Adam Moore paced UTA’s offense with a 2-for-3 day, three RBI and a solo home run.

Moore’s solo homer to right field gave the Mavericks their first of lead of the series and make the score 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. UTSA grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top third. After recording back-to-back strike out by Gainley, Volyes ripped a base hit to right field. Michael McKennon drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Todesco plated Voyles from second with a RBI single up the middle. Rockett’s single, with bases loaded, scored two runs and give the Runners a 3-1 lead.

In the eighth innings the Mavs scored four runs. UTA trimmed the lead 3-2 when Daniel Rieder’s double to right center field to score Kyle Rudy, who reached on a UTSA throwing error. Moore’s doubled to right center to plate David Newby and Rieder and give UTA the 4-3 lead. Moore came around to score when Robby Winn singled to right field and push Texas-Arlington’s lead 5-3.

UTSA hits the road this Tuesday, April 25, as the Roadrunners face Texas A&M Aggies in a non-conference game in College Station, Texas
