UTSA extends winning streak to five with a 5-2 win over Texas Arlington

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA baseball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 5-2 win over Southland Conference foe Texas-Arlington Friday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.

UTSA improved its record to 25-12 on the year and 11-5 in SLC play. UTA dropped its mark to 18-23 overall and 11-6 in league play.

Junior pitcher Steven Vasquez (right) picked up his third straight win, to improve his record to 4-1 on the year. He tossed five and one-third innings, allowed two runs, scattered eight hits and struck out six batters. Senior closer Noah Tritz recorded his seventh save of the season. He pitched one shutout inning, fanned three Mavericks and allowed two walks.

Seven different Roadrunners collected one hit apiece. Junior Brandon Koger led UTSA with a season-high three runs batted in, while junior Michael McKennon and senior Lee Todesco each collected one RBI apiece. Senior infielder J.R. Voyles had his career best 23 game hitting streak come to an end. Voyles went 0-for-4 on the night.

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Riddle got his third loss of the season and even his record to 3-3. Junior Robby Winn and sophomore Brock Wilson paced UTA with two hits apiece, while Senior Kyle Thomason and Wilson each drove in a run for the Mavericks.

UTSA jumped on UTA early when McKennon blasted his team leading ninth home run of the season in the top of the first inning. In the second, the Roadrunners added one run off Koger’s sacrifice fly to sophomore Zach Etheredge from third.

UTA made things interesting in the fourth inning, scoring two runs and make the score 2-2. Junior Ben Burum and Winn reached base with back-to-back singles. Wilson’s double plated Burum and Winn to tie the game.

The Roadrunners regained the lead 4-2 in the top of the sixth inning. Todesco reached base via a UTA error, then freshman Michael Rockett single to left moved Todesco to second. With two outs, Koger (left) doubled down the right field line to score Todesco and Rockett. In the seventh UTSA increased its lead to 5-2. Voyles led off the inning with a walk, then a groundout allowed for Voyles to advance to second. Todesco collected his team leading 34th RBI with a single to left.

UTSA and UTA return to action with game two on Saturday at Clay Gould Ballpark, first pitch set for 3 p.m.
