UTSA wins four events at Rice Bayou Classic

HOUSTON – In its final tune-up for the Texas Relays next week, the UTSA men’s track and field team won four events Saturday at the 24th Annual Victor Lopez/Rice Bayou Classic held at Rice Track and Soccer Stadium.

Seniors Joseph Burton and Marques Mitchell and sophomores Steven Brown and Cedric Harris all grabbed gold as the Roadrunners continued their impressive 2006 campaign.

Burton followed a personal-best performance in the javelin last weekend with a 192-8 measure to take top honors, while Mitchell cruised to a 14.62 clocking for first in the 110-meter hurdles.

Brown and Harris sped to victories in the 100m (10.67) and 200m (21.53), respectively. Harris also finished fourth in the 100m in 10.88, while Brown was busy with a fourth-place leap of 23-11 in the long jump.

Senior Rob Stager bettered his personal record in the hammer throw with a runner-up mark of 161-1, while sophomore Mthobisi Baloyi raced to second in the 800m in 1:51.60. Senior Justin Pitchford was third among collegians in the 800m in 1:54.38 with sophomore Eric Miller close behind in sixth (1:54.22).

Senior David Burnett added a fourth-place time of 48.60 in the 400m and sophomore Nick Perez was fourth in the 10,000m in 34:00.25. Sophomore Luke Johnson registered a pair of fourth-place finishes in the shot put (52-2 ľ) and discus (154-7).

The Roadrunners travel to Austin for the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays next Wednesday-Saturday, April 5-8.
