PLANO, Texas – UTSA junior first baseman Stevi Simpson has been named Aeropostale/Southland Conference Softball Hitter of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Simpson batted a .889 with two doubles, two home runs and six runs batted in and posted a 1.778 slugging percentage to lead a UTSA offense that pounded out 24 runs on 33 hits in a weekend sweep at Nicholls State. She was a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and an RBI in a 6-5, extra-inning victory in game one last Friday. The Angleton native followed that with a 3-for-4 outing in game two that included a double and a three-run home run. Simpson provided a 3-for-3 outing for an encore on Saturday, slugging her fourth homer of the season in a five-inning 10-0 win.
Over the past two weeks - two road sweeps - Simpson is batting .722 (13-for-18) with three doubles, three home runs and nine RBI. This marks the ninth weekly honor for a UTSA softball player this season.
UTSA currently stands in second place at 16-5 in the league and 24-11 overall. The Roadrunners have a non-conference doubleheader at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, April 19, before hosting Louisiana-Monroe this weekend.
Texas State senior Katie Ann Trahan picked up pitching honors for the fourth time this season. In Trahan’s two outings, she went 14 innings, allowing no runs and one hit each ballgame, while striking out nine. The standout from Magnolia, Texas, tossed her eighth and ninth complete-game shutouts of the year as Texas State took two out of three games over Texas-Arlington last weekend. She pushed her record to 18-7 and has a 1.43 ERA for the year.
Texas State continues to lead the league with a 16-2 record and 30-15 overall mark.
