Cheserek, Mitchell post regional qualifiers at Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. – UTSA senior Marques Mitchell and junior Benson Cheserek both met the NCAA regional-qualifying standard to highlight action for the men’s track and field team at the Mt. SAC Relays held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium over the weekend.

Cheserek raced to a season-best time of 9:03.26 to finish ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His performance met the regional standard of 9:07.00, bettered his previous season-best of 9:12.81 posted last week at the Texas Relays and moved him into the No. 3 position on UTSA’s all-time steeplechase performance list.

Mitchell posted a time of 14.29 to finish sixth in the Men’s Invitational 110-meter hurdles on Saturday. He punched his ticket to a third straight Midwest Regional meet with the season best time.

Junior Larry Brooks and freshman Gaston Griffin both posted top-four finishes in Olympic Development races. Brooks, who already is regionally qualified, took fourth in the 800m with a 1:50.68 clocking, while Griffin circled in 47.70 for fourth in the 400m.

In other action, junior Scott Briscoe posted a season-best 47.96 to finish seventh in the Invitational 400m, senior David Burnett turned in a 48.15 for sixth in the 400m and sophomore William Vese clocked a 14.48 for seventh in the Olympic Development 110m hurdles.
