THIBODAUX, La. – Junior Stevi Simpson (right) had three hits and senior Amanda Horton and freshman Rachel Rackley each blasted three-run home runs to help lead the UTSA softball team to a 10-0 run-ruling of Nicholls State Saturday afternoon at the Colonels Softball Diamond.
With the win, the Roadrunners (24-11, 16-5 SLC) complete their second consecutive road sweep and extend their winning streak to a season-long eight games. The Colonels fall to 17-25 and 9-12, dropping their seventh straight decision to UTSA.
Simpson continued her hot streak with a 3-for-3, 2-RBI performance from the plate, finishing the weekend 8-for-9 with two doubles, two home runs and six RBI. Horton launched her conference-leading 13th home run of the season, while Simpson and Rackley also homered to give UTSA 70 for the year. Senior Jessica Els and junior Aimee Murray added three hits apiece as the Roadrunners pounded out 13 hits on the afternoon.
In the circle, sophomore right-hander Amanda Nikolenko (left) picked up her third win of the series with a brilliant, four-hit shutout. She struck out five and walked none in running her record to 15-5 on the season.
UTSA wasted little time building a big lead, taking a 9-0 advantage after just two innings of play.
Els doubled to right and Murray singled to put runners at second and third with one out. Els came home with the first run on a throwing error off the bat of Horton and Simpson followed with a run-scoring single that plated Murray. Rackley then drilled a three-run home run to right to make it 5-0 Roadrunners after one.
Els got things going with her second two-bagger of the game to start the second and Murray reached on her second single to put two runners on for Horton. The senior lost her third long ball of the series to put UTSA up 8-0. Simpson followed with her fourth homer of the year to make it 9-0.
UTSA added a 10th run on an RBI-single by Rackley that plated Murray in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Nikolenko was sharp throughout, allowing just six base runners with only one advancing to third in tossing her third shutout of the year. Alexandra Austin allowed five run – three earned – on five hits in one inning of work in falling to 2-5.
UTSA steps out of conference play for a road doubleheader at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, April 19.
