Vasquez goes the distance for UTSA’s 8-1 win over SLC foe Nicholls State

SAN ANTONIO – Junior pitcher Steven Vasquez (right) tossed his second complete game of the season to lead the UTSA baseball team to an 8-1 victory over Nicholls State in Southland Conference action Thursday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA improved to 21-12 on the year and 8-5 in SLC play. Meanwhile, Nicholls State dropped to 11-26 overall and 4-12 in conference play.

Vasquez struck out eight batters in nine innings of work, allowed seven hits and gave up one run en route for his third win of the season and improving his mark to 3-1.

UTSA’s offense pounded Nicholls State for eight runs off 12 hits, including scoring five runs in the seventh inning. Senior Lee Todesco led four Roadrunners with two hits. Todesco also collected two runs batted in, while junior Michael McKennon added two RBI. Four Runners added an RBI apiece. Junior J.R. Voyles went 1-for-3 on the day, to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.

Junior Michael Bartek suffered his third loss of the season and dipped to 2-3 on the year. Seniors Michael Muscato and Keith Delahoussaye paced Nicholls State with two hits on the day, while senior Jose Higuera solo home run was the only run scored by the Colonels.

UTSA grabbed the early 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the second inning. Todesco (left) led off the inning with his first triple of the season to straight away center. Freshman James Keithley’s RBI single to right field scored Todesco. Freshman Michael Rockett’s double to left center advanced Keithley to third. Sophomore Zach Etheredge plated Keithley home with an RBI single to right field. Junior Brandon Koger drove in the third run of the inning with an RBI groundout.

Nicholls State made it a 3-1 game, when senior Jose Higuera belted his first home run of the season, over the left center field wall.

The Roadrunners put up a five spot in the bottom of the eighth inning, to push their lead to 8-1. Sophomore Phillip Allen reached on with a single, sophomore Marshal Davis got on base via a walk. Voyles loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. McKennon scored two runs with his sixth double of the season. Todesco picked up RBI numbers 29 and 30, when he doubled down the right field line. Keithley’s RBI single scored the fifth run of the inning.

Vasquez sealed the game by striking two of the four batters he faced in the top of the ninth inning.

UTSA and Nicholls State play game two of this three-game set on Friday at 3 p.m.
