Baker ties for second at SLC Women’s Golf Championship

KINGWOOD, Texas – Competing in her first conference championship, UTSA freshman Laura Baker tied for second place at the Southland Conference Women’s Golf Championship held Wednesday at Kingwood Country Club’s Forest Course (par 72 / 6,082 yards).

The first and second day leader, Baker entered the final 18 holes with a two-shot lead over Texas State’s Jennifer Crawford, 147-149. Baker carded an 81 on Wednesday and Crawford turned in a 79, but Lamar’s Therese Nilsson fired the low round of the day with a two-over par 74 to overtake Baker and Crawford by one stroke for individual medalist honors, 227-228.

Baker’s 228 led UTSA, in its first season of women’s golf, to a sixth-place finish in the team’s standings. The Roadrunners carded rounds of 336, 329 and 336 for a 54-hole total of 1,001, 16 shots ahead of seventh-place Nicholls State (1,017).

Lamar successfully defended its conference crown with a 322-307-307=936, finishing well ahead of runner-up Texas State’s 323-319-315=957. Louisiana-Monroe and McNeese State tied for third at 967 and Sam Houston State was fifth (980).

Also for UTSA, freshman Jenna Wessels finished 19th with an 83-83-82=248, while freshman Allie Jordan placed 25th with an 85-87-84=256. Sophomore Michelle Kowalick finished 34th (95-85-89=269) and freshman Neely Hutchins was 35th (95-98-92=285).

The SLC Championship concludes the debut season for UTSA.
