Wolfe named SLC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year

PLANO, Texas – UTSA senior Bryan Wolfe has been selected the 2006 Southland Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season by the league's awards committee, Southland officials announced Tuesday. Texas-Arlington’s Ivorita Taylor won the women’s award.

The awards are presented to the top student-athlete in each conference-sponsored sport. The winner of the student-athlete of the year award must have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average to meet the minimum academic requirement. Athletic standards include superior achievement, having brought significant recognition to the institution and having competed in at least two seasons.

Wolfe, a senior with a 3.66 grade point average in his actuarial science major, finished second in the heptathlon with 5,103 points at this year's SLC indoor championship. He was named to the 2006 Indoor All-SLC team for this performance. He helped the Roadrunners to a team championship, the first in school history.

During regular-season competition, Wolfe posted a career best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5,346 points in the heptathlon at the Idaho State Intermountain Championships.

A Raymondville, Texas, product, Wolfe was the 2004-05 SLC Men's Indoor and Outdoor Student-Athlete of the Year. He has been named to the Hibernia Bank/SLC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll three times (2003-05) and made UTSA's Dean's List three times. In the spring of 2004, Wolfe made the list with perfect 4.0 GPA. He was also named to the SLC All-Academic track and field teams after his sophomore and junior seasons.

Taylor, a senior from St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, earned first-team All-SLC this year after winning the 800-meter run. She posted a time of 2:14.13 to finish 3.73 seconds ahead of the second-place competitor. Taylor helped the Lady Mavs to a sixth-place showing at the 2006 championship. It is Taylor's second straight 800 title as she won the event at the 2005 outdoor meet.

Taylor is now an eight-time All-SLC performer. Included was a third-place finish at the SLC Cross Country Championship last fall.

An accounting major, Taylor has accumulated a 3.96 GPA at UTA. Taylor adds this award for indoor track to her Student-Athlete of the Year awards earned after the 2005 outdoor track season and the 2005 cross country season last November.

Taylor has also been voted "Super Scholar Athlete" every year at UTA with a 3.0 GPA or higher. In 2005, she was named the BG Wilson Female Scholar Athlete of the Year at her school. In addition, Taylor has been place on the Hibernia Bank/SLC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll twice.
