PLANO, Texas – UTSA juniors Ursula Mares and Aimee Murray have been named Aeropostale/Southland Conference Softball Pitcher and Hitter of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday.
Mares and Murray played key roles in helping the Roadrunners go 5-0 last week with a Tuesday doubleheader sweep of Houston and a weekend road sweep of conference foe Sam Houston State.
Mares picked up her first and UTSA’s fourth weekly pitching honor of the year after posting a 3-0 record, 1.29 earned run average and one save in four appearances last week. She recorded 17 strikeouts an allowed just four earned runs on 20 hits in 21 and two-thirds innings pitched.
In game one of the Houston twinbill, Mares struck out seven and allowed two runs in a complete-game win. She came on in relief in the bottom of the eighth inning in UTSA's 4-2 win at Sam Houston on Saturday, earning her first save of the year by getting out of a second-and-third, one-out situation. Mares tossed complete-game victories in the final two contests of the Sam Houston series as the Roadrunners completed a perfect week. She now owns a team-best 2.39 ERA on the season and a 1.48 ERA in conference play.
Murray led the Roadrunners at the plate with a .438 batting average, two doubles, two home runs, six runs batted in and three runs scored. She also posted a .938 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage.
Murray collected a double, a homer and three RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Houston last Tuesday. She had two hits in game one and collected the game winning hits in each of the last two games of the Sam Houston series sweep. Murray lined a one-out pitch over the right field fence for a two-run home run in the sixth inning of a 3-1 UTSA win in game two Saturday and crushed an RBI-double to the fence in center field that proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win on Sunday. She now has a 12-game hitting streak and is batting a team-best .400 on the season and .434 in SLC play.
UTSA has earned eight SLC weekly honors this season. The Roadrunners hit the road for a three-game series at Nicholls State this Friday-Saturday, April 14-15.
