CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The UTSA men’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday morning in Southland Conference action.
UTSA dropped to 7-11 on the year and 3-3 in SLC play, while TAMU-CC improves 9-6 overall and remains unbeaten at 4-0 in league play.
The Islanders began the day winning two out of the three doubles matches. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Mikhail Pavlov and Andrey Kumantsov picked up the first point with a 8-2 win over UTSA’s Jonas Hoglund and Andre Moreira. Hetori Chaves and Anthony Portois of UTSA won their match at the No. 3 double match with a 8-2 win. The Islanders clinched the doubles points when Jose Ycaza and Raul Morant-Rivas defeated Robin Fernandes and Adam Becker, 8-5, at the No.2 slot.
In singles action, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won five of the six matches. The Runners tied the match 1-all, when Moreira of UTSA handed Pavlov a 6-1, 6-3 loss at the No. 3 position. TAMU-CC took the lead 2-1 at the No. 5 slot, as Ycaza defeated Joe Olfindo in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went up 3-1 when Kumantsov breezed past Hoglund 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 1 position. Henselijn sealed the match for the Islanders with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, win over Chaves in the No. 6 slot. Also in action for UTSA were Portois and Fernandes, but were defeated.
