SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA softball team dropped a score 7-5 decision on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field in Southland Conference action. With the loss the Roadrunners fall to 16-11 and 10-5 in the Southland Conference, while Texas State improves to 24-12 with a conference leading 11-1 mark.
UTSA stormed to an early lead scoring three runs in the first inning. Infielder Aimee Murray (right) led things off with a two-run homer and was followed by a solo shot by Brittany Cantu.
Texas State would respond in the top of the third inning with three runs off six hits including a two-run single by Kristen Gunter to tie the game. The Bobcats would add four more runs in the fourth and sixth inning as Gunter and Katie Ann Trahan went a combined 5-for-6 accounting for all seven of the team’s RBI. Meanwhile, Pitcher Sarah Lancour (10-6) recovered from her first inning struggle to pitch five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts to give Texas State a 7-3 lead heading into the final frame.
The Roadrunners managed to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the seventh when Stacey Gillespie belted a two-run shot into center field with one out. But Lancour quickly ended the rally by striking out Leanne Risberg and Stevi Simpson giving the Bobcats a three-game series sweep and Lancour her second complete game win in the series.
Picking up the loss for UTSA was Amanda Nikolenko (10-5) who gave up five runs in four innings but did strike out five Bobcats.
UTSA will look to rebound as it plays host to the Houston Cougars in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 4. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
