SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The UTSA softball team (16-10, 10-4 SLC) fell in doubleheader action against I-35 rival Texas State (23-12, 10-1 SLC) on Saturday by a score of 6-7 and 1-3 in Southland Conference action Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
With the two losses the Roadrunners now trail the conference leading Bobcats by three games in the loss column.
UTSA jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game after Stacey Gillespie (right) belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. But Texas State responded scoring seven runs over the final four innings to steal the road win. Bobcat pitcher Katie Ann Trahan pulled out the win with a complete game while striking out nine batters to improve her record to 14-6. UTSA’s Ursula Mares picked up her first of two losses on the day, dropping her record to 4-6 on the season.
In the second game the Roadrunners erased a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the seventh after Brittany Cantu drove a one out single into the outfield platting Aimee Murray from second forcing extra innings. Texas State quickly answered back with two runs in the top of the eighth highlighted by a one out solo homerun by outfielder Alex Newton to complete the Bobcats doubleheader sweep.
UTSA will look to bounce back tomorrow in the third and final game of the series. First pitch is slated for noon at Roadrunner Field.
