SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UTSA men’s tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to rival Texas-Arlington, 4-3, on Saturday morning at the UTSA Tennis Center in Southland Conference action in San Antonio, Texas.
UTSA dropped to 7-9 on the year and 3-1 in SLC play, while UTA improves 9-6 overall and remains unbeaten at 4-0 in league play.
The Roadrunners started the day winning all three doubles matches and take a 1-0 lead over UTA. Jonas Hoglund and Andre Moreira paired up for the easy 8-2 win over UTA’s Sandy Farquharson and Daniel Omana. Adam Becker and Robin Fernandes won a close match, 8-7, against Niels Buksik and Diego Mattar of Texas-Arlington. Also in action in doubles were Hetori Chaves and Anthony Portois, who teamed up for the 8-5 win.
In singles action, the Mavericks rallied after losing the double point, to win four of the six singles matches. Buksik of UTA tied the match 1-all with a straight set victory over Chaves at the No. 6 position. Moreira gave UTSA the lead (3-1) at the No. 3 slot by cruising past Omana 6-4 and 6-2. Farquharson defeated Hoglund in straight sets to make the match 3-2. Then the Mavericks tied the match 3-3 when Becker lost 6-3, 6-3 to Agis at the No. 4 slot. The match came between Portois and Matter at the No. 2 singles. Portois of UTSA dropped the first set 4-6 to Mattar of UTA, but recovered quickly to win the second set 6-3 and lost the third set 7-5 to clinch the match for Texas-Arlington.
