Pitching keys UTSA’s sweep of Dallas Baptist

DALLAS – Junior Blake Brannon went five strong innings and struck out a season-high seven batters en route to his second win of the season, as the UTSA baseball team completed the sweep over Dallas Baptist with an 8-4 win Saturday afternoon at Patriot Field.

Senior Caleb Barton tossed one and two-thirds inning, allowing no runs and striking out one batter. Senior Noah Tritz collected his third save of the season.

Sophomore Zach Etheredge paced the Roadrunner offense with a season-high four runs batted in. Etheredge also went yard for the second time this season.

The Roadrunners recorded their first sweep of the season. The last time, UTSA swept a team was against Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State on May 15-16, 2004, at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA scored its first run in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly, taking an early 1-0 lead.

DBU responded with a solo home run by Drew Holder in the bottom of the inning, to tie the game.

The Patriots added another solo home run by Brandon Bantz, his first collegiate homer, giving DBU a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning.

In the fifth inning, Evan Bigley hit his own solo shot, making the score 3-1.

DBU starter Rodney Brantley, pitched the first five and two-thirds innings, allowing only one hit and an unearned run, but gave up back-to-back walks in the sixth. UTSA followed with a three-run home run by Etheredge to retake the lead 4-3, chasing Brantley from the game. Brantley fell to 3-1 on the season.

The Roadrunners struck again in the eighth inning, scoring four runs on five hits, increasing their lead to 8-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Patriots scored one run, after Cody Montgomery tripled and scored on a RBI-single by Jeremy Goldschmeding, but could not get anything else going, leaving the final score 8-4.

UTSA returns home for a single game against Texas-Pan American on Tuesday, March 7, at Roadrunner Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
