Koger’s single lifted UTSA, 4-3, against McNeese State in extra innings

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior designated hitter Brandon Koger single to left plated the winning run and gave the UTSA baseball team a 4-3 win in extra inning against McNeese State Cowboys in Southland Conference action Saturday afternoon. This game was continuation of game one from March 31.

Senior pitcher Noah Tritz picked up his fifth win of the season. He tossed three innings, collected one strikeout, allowed two walks and two hits. Junior Steven Vasquez went nine strong innings, struck out six batters and gave only one was earned.

Koger led three UTSA players with two hits. Michael McKennon, J.R. Voyles, James Keithley and Koger each collected RBI apiece for the Roadrunners.

Ryan Cartie got the loss for McNeese State (0-1). Cartie went a third inning, allowed one run off two hits. Chris Fontenot and Shon Landry paced the Cowboys with three hits apiece.

McNeese State took the early 1-0 lead. Fontenot started the inning with a single to right field, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Fontenot stole third and came around to score on a passed ball.

The Cowboys added one run in the top of the fifth inning, when Landry led off with a single. Back-to-back bunts by McNeese moved Landry to third, then scored on a passed ball by UTSA. McNeese extended its led to 3-0 off an RBI single to right by Tyler Dugas’ to score Charlie Kingrey, who reached base with a double.

UTSA cut the deficit 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Voyles’ RBI single, with one out, scored Koger from second base. Sophomore Marshal Davis was plated home by McKennon’s fielder’s choice. Davis reached base with a fielder’s choice.

Senior Lee Todesco led off the bottom of the inning with a double to right center. Sophomore Phillip Allen, who pinched ran for Todesco, came around to score from second base and tie the game 3-3 courtesy of a McNeese error.

Keithley led of the bottom of the 12th with a single, Zach Etheredge moved Keithley to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Koger’s single brought home the winning run.
