UTSA Baseball set to host Southland Conference foe McNeese State this weekend

Setting the Scene
UTSA welcomes McNeese State Cowboys to Roadrunner Field this weekend for a three-game series beginning March 31-April 2, first pitch set for 3 p.m. on March 31.

All-Time Series
McNeese leads the all-time series 25-16 against UTSA. Last season, the Cowboys won the series winning two out of three games in Lake Charles, La.

Last Outing
Northwestern State avoided the sweep with a 6-1 win over UTSA on March 26 at Roadrunner Field. In the first two games of the series, the Roadrunners smacked four home runs, but in Sunday’s game NSU pitching held the Runners homerless and allowed one run. The lone run for UTSA came off a double by senior J.R. Voyles. Junior Michael McKennon went yard twice over the weekend, including a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning of the first game.

Scouting McNeese State
McNeese State took the season series against Texas State last weekend in Lake Charles, La. The Cowboys won the first game, 2-1, then dropped the second game, 4-5. In the series finale, MSU got the 5-4 win to clinch the series. McNeese is led by Bryan Cartie, who leads the team with a .339 batting average. James Thibodeaux ranks first on the team with three home runs and is third with 12 runs batted in.

Closing March With A Bang
With one remaining in March, UTSA will end this with a winning mark. Currently, the Runners are 11-3, which includes a season-long eight game winning streak.

Ruffin’s Stellar Outing
Junior right handed pitcher Josh Ruffin pitched one of his best game in his Roadrunner career. Ruffin tossed UTSA’s first solo two-hitter in the 3-0 win against Lamar on March 18. The Humble, Texas native, had no-hitter through seven innings, but Matt Lamberth broke up the no-no with a single.

Ruffin’s picked up UTSA’s first Southland conference weekly honors on March 22.


UTSA Brings Down Elite Programs
UTSA hosted the Baseball Express Collegiate Classic this past weekend and went 4-0. The Roadrunners collected wins over two Big Ten schools, Iowa and Illinois. Took down a Big 12 program in No. 15 Texas A&M. Also handled Louisiana-Lafayette to complete weekend with an unblemished record

Voyles’ Streaking
Voyles currently has a season best 12-game hitting, which started against Dallas Baptist on March 4.

Multi McKennon
Michael McKennon leads the team with 10 multi-hit games, including seven games with at least two hits.

Runners Picked Fifth
Although winning the 2005 SLC Tournament, the Roadrunners were showed love from the conference. UTSA was picked to finish fifth in both pre-season polls.

Saltzgaber Earns First-Team
Third baseman Ryan Saltzgaber was the lone Runner to be selected 2006 SLC Pre-Season first-team.

Voyles And Vasquez Garner Second-Team All SLC
Second baseman Voyles and right-handed pitcher Vasquez earned second-team all-conference this season.
