Roadrunners win seven events, post five regional qualifiers at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas – The UTSA track and field teams raised eyes Saturday at the Texas Invitational, winning seven events and posting five NCAA regional qualifying marks.

The men turned in all five of the regional qualifiers and won five events, highlighted by senior T.R. Sissel’s second regional mark in the 400-meter hurdles of the season.

Sissel clocked a 51.93 to win the intermediates and also ran the second leg on the 4x400m relay team along with freshman Gaston Griffin, senior David Burnett and junior Scott Briscoe. The foursome grabbed gold with a regional-qualifying 3:09.80.

Griffin also won the 400m in 47.43, while junior Larry Brooks won the 800m with a regional 1:50.28. Sophomore William Vese cruised to a regional 14.21 to take top honors in the 110m hurdles.

The 4x100m relay team also punched its ticket to the NCAA Midwest Regional held on this same track in May. Vese, Briscoe and sophomores Cedric Harris and Steven Brown passed the baton to regional-qualifying 40.63 to finish second.

Sophomore Luke Johnson broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a third-place mark of 168-3. Senior Joseph Burton posted a big personal record in the javelin, a runner-up effort of 197-2. Sophomore Mthobisi Baloyi added a third-place finish in the 800m in 1:51.15.

Senior Karilyn Petty won the women’s 2,000m steeplechase with a 7:20.59 clocking, while sophomore Ashley Allen was second in the high jump with a 5-4 ˝ clearance.
