Northwestern State defeats UTSA baseball, 6-1, in SLC action

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA baseball team dropped a 6-1 decision to Southland Conference member Northwestern State Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners dipped to 15-10 on the year and 3-3 in league play, meanwhile, the Demons improved to 13-13 overall and pick up their second conference win.

Junior pitcher Blake Brannon (3-5) went four and two-third innings, struck out six batters, allowed four run off six hits and walked three. Senior pitcher Caleb Barton came in relief and tossed two innings, recorded two strike outs, allowed two runs and gave up four hits. Sophomore Mark Ruffin relieved Barton in the seventh inning and tossed two and one-thirds innings of scoreless baseball.

Senior J.R. Voyles (right) drove in UTSA's only run of the game with a double. Freshman James Keithley led UTSA with two hits on the day. Four Roadrunners collected one hit apiece.

Demons' pitcher Drew Brown got his third win of the season, as he held the UTSA's offense to one run in seven innings. He also recorded seven strike outs and walked five Runners.

Marty DeWees paced Northwestern State with three hits, including a two-run homer. DeWees also had two runs batted in, while Bobby Barbier collected two RBI himself, along with one hit.

Northwestern State jumped to the 1-0 lead in the top of the second of the inning. Brandon Morgan led off with a triple to right center, then came home off a sacrifice fly by Barbier. 

With two outs, the Demons scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning. DeWees' home run over the left field fence highlighted the inning.

UTSA pulled within 4-1 when Voyles' RBI double down the left line plated sophomore Marshal Davis, who reached base with a single to left field in the bottom of the fifth.

In the seventh inning, NSU tagged on two more runs to make the score 6-1, with two outs. Barbier and Ben Rodriguez each collected RBI singles to score the Demons runs.

UTSA returns to the diamond with a three-game set against SLC foe McNeese State on Friday-Sunday, March 31-April 2, at Roadrunner Field.
