UTSA picks up fourth SLC win with a 5-2 decision over Sam Houston State
SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA women tennis team handed Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State Lady Bearkats a 5-2 loss at UTSA tennis center, on March 25.
The Runners improve to 4-1 in SLC play and 8-5 overall.
UTSA began the day winning the doubles points. Karen Scide and Sandra Kukla picked up a 8-2 decision at the No. 2 position, Barbara Mooney and Tanya Hasking won a 9-7 thriller at the No. 1 slot. Scide and Kukla played aggressive en route to their victory. Hasking and Mooney were tied 7-7 in their match, but they won the next two points to seal their match and the doubles point.
At the No. 3 double, Wallin and Soto dropped a 8-6 decision Cristina Flores and Emma McDongall of Sam Houston State
The freshman trio of Kukla, Scida and Monika Drabkova won their singles matches in straight sets. Kukla easily win the first set 6-2, by playing patiently and waiting out Lata Assudani's mistakes. After leading 5-2 in the second set, Assudani evened the match 5-5. Kukla finally won the match 6-5 with a 7-4 in the tiebreaker. Both Scida at the No. 3 singles and Drabkova at the No.4 won their matches in straight sets. Scida scored a 6-1, 6-2 victory over McDouglall and Drabkova posted a 6-4 6-0 win over Peta Taylor. Scida extended her winning record with 10-2 this season in singles.
At the No. 1 singles Wallin had a tough match against Sam Houston State's Irina Sotnikova, and lost two close set with 5-7, 6-7 (1). Wallin lost two game points at 5-5 in the first set, lefthanded Sotnikova held serve at 7-5 and won the first set. In the second set Wallin lost a tough 7-6 set to Sotnikova in the tiebreak. Also, Hasking at the No. 5 position lost her match over Flores of Sam Houston State, 6-2, 6-1.
At the No 6 spot, Ana Paula Soto handed Lauren Janak a 7-6, 6-3 loss.
The Roadrunners return to play at home tomorrow at 11:00 against Texas-Arlington.
