McKennon's walk-off homer lifted UTSA, 4-3, over Northwestern State

SAN ANOTNIO, Texas - UTSA's junior Michael McKennon's (right) walk-off home run in the ninth inning led the UTSA baseball team to a 4-3 win over Northwestern State Demons in Southland Conference action Friday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 14-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while the Demons dipped to 12-12 on the year and 1-6 in league play.

McKennon went 2-for-5 with a home run, one run batted in and one run scored. Junior Ryan Saltzgaber and freshman James Kiethley each collected two hits apiece.

Junior pitcher Steven Vasquez went eight full innings for UTSA, but got the no decision. He fanned a season-high 11 batters and gave up three runs. Senior reliever Noah Tritz came in from the bullpen to collect his fourth win of the season.

Daniel Clark suffered his third loss on the season. He tossed one and two-third innings, allowed one run, two walks and struck out two Roadrunners,

Northwestern State took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. All of the runs came with two-outs in the inning. Lead-off hitter Michael Palermo led with a single to center field. Marty Dewees' triple to right center scored Palermo from first. Brandon Morgan plated Dewees home with a infield hit to third base. Mile Durham's double scored the third runoff the inning.

UTSA tied the game 3-all in the bottom of the seventh inning. J.R. Voyles started the inning with a single. Saltzgaber moved Voyles to third with a single to center. With bases loaded, Keithley was walked to score Voyles.

In the bottom of ninth, McKennon ended the game with one swing to give UTSA the 4-3 win.

UTSA and Northwestern State play game two of the three-game set on Saturday at Roadrunner Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
