Dionne Phelps named interim head coach

SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas at San Antonio Athletics Department announced Thursday that Dionne Phelps has been named interim head coach in the wake of Tim Carter’s reassignment on Tuesday. Phelps will oversee the day-to-day operations of the program until the search for a new head coach is completed.

“We are very fortunate to have a person on our staff with Dionne's experience,” UTSA Athletics Director Lynn Hickey said. “Our student-athletes have confidence in his leadership and we are happy that he has accepted the role of interim head coach while we are in the transition phase of searching for a new head coach."”

Phelps is a three-year veteran of the coaching staff, serving as an assistant coach in 2003-05 until his promotion to associate head coach in November 2005.

A San Antonio native and a graduate of Judson High School in Converse, Texas, Phelps came to UTSA after serving as assistant coach at Texas State from 1999-2003. Prior to his time at Texas State, Phelps was an assistant coach at Baylor University from 1998-99, and at Texas Lutheran University from 1989-98.

Phelps played collegiately at Texas Lutheran and was inducted into the Bulldog Athletic Hall Of Honors in 2002 following a career that saw him earn 1988 Big State All-Conference and All-District, as well as 1989 Heart of Texas All-Conference honors.

While at Judson, Phelps earned district most valuable player honors as well as all-district and all-region mention.

He holds a bachelor of arts degree from Texas Lutheran, and a master's degree in education from Texas State.
